Volunteering

What inspires you to volunteer? If you currently volunteer, how vested are you in the organization(s)? Do the organizations utilize your skill set in the best manner?

I volunteer with The Fresh Air Fund in New York City. I spend two hours a week tutoring a student I am assigned to work with for a specific quarter.

For me,volunteering is about doing something completely different--in my case, tutoring--from what I do normally, and making an impact. Tutoring helps me think outside of the box when communicating with students. Whether its working with my student on subjects she needs help with at school or providing quick insights about my projects at work, we always find ourselves learning from each other, and other students and tutors in the program. For e.g., we once found ourselves discussing mission statements and started researching missions of different organizations we were familiar with, including the Fresh Air Fund.

That is a great approach to volunteering - learning from one another and contributing your skills to make a difference.

I volunteered to build a new charitable business. You can find the detailed information on the website www.montyscorner.org.

I did this to find the meaning in my life (again).

I am an IT Business consultant. I loved my job in the past. Brining success to other businesses gave me great joy and motivation (and lots of money). I used to be a workaholic.

I still do love my job but now I see it as just a job that brings income, pays my bills and make other businesses richer (and I don’t care).

With my new business, I now have a passion to do something for the mankind.

Although I have to deal with lots of bloody legal requirements which only delay the actual focus on the cause, I keep going.

At the moment I am furious that, I want to do a charitable business (with absolutely no personal gain from it) and I am asked to pay £5000 for registration with the charity commissioners in the UK. I have so far covered all the other expenses from my own pocket but this amount is just too much to cover privately. If I cannot raise this money I cannot register, if I cannot register I cannot benefit from any grants or build business relationships. Currently, I am in a chicken-and-egg situation. Because of the nature of the business I need rather sponsorship. Benefits of the business will be only realised in the future (long term investment) therefore I am not in a hurry to collect lots of money upfront, just enough to satisfy the legal requirements.

But, I keep going… I know that this is just a small hurdle and cannot give up my mission.

I remember the words (not exactly though) Paulo Coelho wrote in his book called “Zahir” – “When you start your journey if you come to a point where you feel that you are stuck and you cannot make it any further, just remember that, you made the first steps so you can finish it”

Yes, volunteer work is different and it is very rewarding and the reward varies from person to person.
